Scale
For the Tiramisu Cream Layer:
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream: For the light, whipped texture that forms the base of the cream.
- 8 oz mascarpone cheese: This soft cheese gives tiramisu its characteristic richness and smoothness.
- 1 can (14 oz) dulce de leche: A rich, caramelized milk syrup that infuses sweetness into the cream and provides the signature flavor for this twist on the classic.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: To enhance the flavor of the cream.
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar: For an extra touch of sweetness to balance the caramel notes of the dulce de leche.
For the Ladyfingers:
- 1 package (7 oz) ladyfingers: These soft, spongy cookies are the traditional base of tiramisu. You can find them at most grocery stores or Italian markets.
- ½ cup strong brewed coffee: Use freshly brewed coffee or espresso for the best flavor. You can also make it a bit stronger to enhance the depth of flavor.
- ½ cup dulce de leche: For soaking the ladyfingers, giving them that sweet, caramel flavor that permeates each bite.
For Garnish:
- Cocoa powder: For dusting the top of the tiramisu just before serving.
- Chocolate shavings or grated dark chocolate (optional): To add an extra touch of indulgence and decoration.
Instructions
FIRST STEP: PREPARE THE DULCE DE LECHE CREAM LAYER
- Whip the Heavy Cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Make sure the bowl and beaters are cold for the best results. Set aside.
- Combine the Dulce de Leche and Mascarpone: In another bowl, combine the mascarpone cheese, dulce de leche, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Beat together until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This forms the rich, caramel-flavored cream.
- Fold in the Whipped Cream: Gently fold the whipped heavy cream into the mascarpone mixture, being careful not to deflate the whipped cream. You want the mixture to stay light and airy.
SECOND STEP: SOAK THE LADYFINGERS
- Prepare the Soaking Syrup: In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee with the dulce de leche. Stir well until the dulce de leche has dissolved into the coffee. This syrup will infuse the ladyfingers with a sweet, coffee-caramel flavor.
- Soak the Ladyfingers: Dip each ladyfinger quickly into the coffee-dulce de leche mixture, making sure not to soak them too long, as they can become too soggy. The ladyfingers should absorb just enough of the syrup to soften but remain firm.
- Layer the Ladyfingers: Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers at the bottom of your 9×9-inch or 8×8-inch dish. If the dish is a bit larger, you may need more ladyfingers to cover the bottom.
THIRD STEP: ASSEMBLE THE TIRAMISU
- Add the First Cream Layer: Spread half of the dulce de leche mascarpone cream mixture over the soaked ladyfingers, smoothing it out evenly with a spatula.
- Repeat the Ladyfinger Layer: Add another layer of soaked ladyfingers on top of the cream layer, pressing them gently into place.
- Top with the Remaining Cream: Spread the remaining cream mixture over the second layer of ladyfingers, smoothing it evenly to cover the dessert.
FOURTH STEP: CHILL AND SERVE
- Chill the Tiramisu: Cover the dish with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate the tiramisu for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to firm up, making it easier to slice.
- Garnish with Cocoa Powder: Just before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with a generous amount of cocoa powder. You can also add chocolate shavings or grated dark chocolate for an extra layer of flavor.
- Slice and Serve: Using a sharp knife, slice the tiramisu into squares and serve chilled. Enjoy the luxurious layers of caramelized sweetness and creamy indulgence.
